A floating soundboard allows the soundboard to move or vibrate more freely. This allows the instrument to have a wider range of dynamics.
David uses a side-bridging system that is mounted directly to the soundboard with the strings going through the bridge instead of over the bridge. This better transfers the vibration of the strings to the soundboard.
